@ 3DFX-Man – Quote: “Developer can post your paypal account that we want give to you a gift.” What the fuck does that even mean? So, you want to give the developers money because you liked the game they made??

Well, here’s a crazy fucking idea! How about you actually BUY THE FUCKING GAME instead of pirating it! DUH! Makes a fuck of alot more sense, doesn’t it? Go to Steam and buy it.

My God, how the fuck did your post make any sense to you before you posted it? I am just gonna assume you are a young kid on mom & dads computer. I really hope you are not an adult using the logic you did above.

I am gonna pirate this game and try it out. If I like it then I will buy it. I always support the developers of games that entertain me. I wish these game developers would make demos like they used back in the day. I remember back when I was younger that pretty much every single game that came out for PC always had a demo of the game to try out first to see if you liked it or not. Not to mention PC Gamer magazine used to include a CD that had the newest and latest game demos and sometimes some nifty software to play around with. Man, I miss those days.

There is no piracy without sin. There is no way to get this game or another from here, then say that you will buy and that you did not commit piracy … because piracy is piracy, even if it is for 10 seconds.

This is part of a speech I wrote a while back, and judging by the uninformed and unintelligent banter I feel it should go right here.

From the Dictionary, “Copying” is defined as,
Make a similar or identical version of; reproduce.

From the Dictionary, “Piracy” is defined as,
The practice of attacking and robbing ships at sea.
    – a similar practice in other contexts, esp. hijacking
    – the unauthorized use or reproduction of another’s work.

Companies prefer to define “Piracy” as “the unauthorized use or reproduction of another’s work.

By this definition, anyone who reviews anything is “Pirating” that thing. They are “reproducing another’s work” to share with others.

Examples, the woman who looks at a pattern in a store then goes home and sews the dress for herself is “Pirating” that pattern. The person who tastes a recipe, then makes that recipe at home is “Pirating” that recipe. The artist who paints a master in a gallery is “Pirating” the artwork. A game that contains material from another game is “Pirating”. A story that contains material from another story is “Pirating”. Singing a song is “Pirating”. Repeating words is “Pirating”. We as human beings are “Pirating” when we sin; we are making an “unauthorized use of another’s work”, and every time we reproduce; we are “reproducing another’s work to share with others”.

If “Pirating” and “Copying” sound similar it is because they are. In fact, many companies use the term “Pirating” to incorrectly include “Copying”, or to flat out replace it because they believe the word “Pirating” sounds phonetically harsher than “Copying”.

Then what is the real problem?

The real problem is the “unauthorized use of” part of the definition of “Pirating”. It is, by the companies’ own definitions, “using our products without paying for them first”. They do not want people “trying before they buy”. They just want people to blindly hand over their money with no questions asked either about the product or the company itself.

“Trying before you buy” has been a standard practice in human society for many, many years. It is how we protect ourselves from scams, and confidence schemes. It is how we minimize financial risk to maximize the acquisition of quality. To, in other words, “get what we’ve paid for”.

Examples, the company that investigates another company before doing business is “trying before they buy”. The person who test drives a car is “trying before they buy”. The person who tastes a piece of food in a restaurant from another’s plate is “trying before they buy”. The person who wears an article of clothing in a department store is “trying before they buy”. The person who swings a golf club in a sporting goods store is “trying before they buy”. The person who smells a perfume or cologne is “trying before they buy”.

“Dating” itself is “trying before you buy”.

Even though this practice occurs all the time in everyday life, and is often necessary, these companies don’t want to admit it. They would rather delude people into believing that the concept of “quality” comes from the company’s own word rather than from the customer’s experience; “take our word for it, trust us, don’t look inside the box just believe us that the product is in there” or “we will crack down on you harshly if you try something before you buy it!” And going so far as to say, “If you try it before you buy it we will label you as a CRIMINAL!”

“Trying before buying” is not criminal, it’s normal.

“Trying before buying” is the “Consumer accountability test”. It’s how we as people weigh the actual product against the company’s word to see if the company was lying as to whether or not the product holds true, it is in it’s very essence the examination of the Company’s truth claims.

It is the company’s job to produce a quality product, it is not the customer’s job to just hand the company money.

Many companies used to release “Demonstrations”, or “Demos” of their products for people to do exactly that, “Try before you buy, see that it is what we claim it is”. Now companies no longer release demos, they don’t even put in the effort to release a full product. The products being released today are willful attempts to construct a house of straw and sell them as brick and mortar through advertisements, marketing campaigns, and hype.

These companies claim “Piracy” is the cause of their lost sales, when it is “Copying”, or “Reviewing”, or “Trying before buying” a product that is the primary reason most people choose to purchase, or to not purchase a product. And, when a company tries to stifle reviews by not allowing reviewers or consumers to “try before they buy” so that they in turn are unable to advise others, the company is expecting people to pay them with no representation of the product other than the company’s own biased view; “Pay us without knowing anything about the product except what we tell you, trust us”.

And it is this “trust” that customers do not give these companies due to the companies’ own unethical business practices.

Companies advertise a “deck of playing cards” by showing the face of a single card, representing that card as the entire deck. When a consumer “Pirates” the deck they find out that the “deck” is in fact a single playing card. These companies become angry at consumers who find out that they are selling one card, but charging for 52. The company will label as a “Pirate” someone who uncovers the fact that the company is willfully and knowingly trying to deceive consumers in order to obtain their money. This sounds very familiar…

    Fraud
    noun
wrongful or criminal deception intended to result in financial or personal gain.
a person or thing intended to deceive others, typically by unjustifiably claiming or being credited with accomplishments or qualities.

When a company tries to forcibly restrict consumers from “trying before they buy” they incur “No Sales” due to their own business practices. The company complains that they incur and must recover “Lost Sales” due to “Piracy” when in reality it is not “Lost” because the company never possessed it in the first place. Those sales are not “Lost” they are in fact “No Sales”, but companies use the term “Lost sales” because it falsely puts the burden of performance on the consumer whereas “No Sales” directly reflects on the performance of the company.

Misrepresenting a product for financial or personal gain is “Fraud”, plain and simple.

Trying to prevent the consumer from learning or knowing that a product has been misrepresented is called “Deception”, and “Deception” means to: blind, hoax, fake, ruse, scheme, dodge, cheat, swindle, etc.

When a company does not allow “Trying before buying” they are most likely attempting to cover up “Fraud”, and by removing the ability of the people to hold that company accountable, that company commits “Deception” for financial gain, “Theft”.

An example of this practice can be clearly seen in the concept of “Pre-orders”.

When a company offers pre-orders for digital media they are, in fact, wanting the consumer to pay in full for a product that, for all intents and purposes, does not exist, selling the person the idea of a product instead of an actual product, but not taking the idea of their money but in fact, taking their actual money.

These companies take payment for goods and/or services not rendered by whitewashing the customer with the company’s word and trying to prevent that customer from being able to test the truth claims of the company.

Trying to force the consumers money to go into the company’s pocket without exchanging goods or services of equal worth, for the company’s own purposes? That sounds an awful lot like “Hijacking”.

    Hijack
    verb
to illegally seize something and force it to go to a different destination or use it for one’s own purposes
to take over something and use it for a different purpose
    to steal

Taking away the consumer’s right to choose turns these companies into the very criminals they accuse everyone else of being.

Trying something to find out if it’s worth the price, and to see if the company is lying? That’s called “Accountability”.

Outright lies and trickery to increase profit? Isn’t that the real theft?

    Isn’t that the real “Piracy”?

Yes, how many times have I played a cracked game and said, “Thank God I didn’t pay one cent for that!!”? Cracked games protect consumers and save us TONS of money that would have otherwise been wasted. If developers want to get paid, do the work, not half-assed work.

i wonder if this is any fun. for me the time wasted isnt the cost of the game, simply the cost of the time wasted downloading lol… i have a 150kbs capped net, and i mostly do not want to waste the *time* required to download moreso than the money required to buy something. now that pretty much all games exceed 10-20gb + … there is no hope for me to save my time downloading since there are no longer any hard copies. that said… i still wonder if this is worth it lol… may invest the time, may not.
